FAFSA FAQs

By filling out the FAFSA, students become eligible for federal grants (money you do not have to pay back), low-interest federal loans (money you do need to pay back), and work-study programs (on-campus jobs that help cover the cost of tuition).

After you submit your results to HSU (HSU’s School Code – 003571), our Financial Aid Office can determine how much financial aid you can be awarded to help cover the costs of college.

7 things you need before filing the FAFSA

  • Your FSA ID
  • Your Social Security Number
  • Your Driver’s License Number
  • Your federal income tax returns
  • Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
  • Records of your assets (i.e., savings accounts, checking accounts)
  • HSU’s School Code – 003571

If you are a dependent (if your parent(s) claim you on their taxes), then you will also need most of the above information for your parent(s).

When do I need to fill out the FAFSA?

You can begin filling out your 2023-2024 FAFSA on October 1, 2022.

A large portion of financial aid in the United States is distributed on a rolling basis, meaning the sooner you apply, the better your chances of receiving generous aid.

Nothing. Nada. Nil. It is free to fill out.

Do I have to fill out the FAFSA each year?

If you want to utilize federal financial aid, you must fill out the FAFSA for each academic year.
